Tech Tip Presentations at PhotoPlus Expo:

Why Medium Format?

“Why medium format?” Considering the investment, the relatively-high resolutions of current-generation DSLRs, and the perception that 35mm systems provide “good-enough” image quality, it’s a question that comes up often. In this presentation we break down the tangible benefits of Medium Format systems and dispel some common myths about what separates 35mm DSLRs, crop-medium-format-sensors, and “true” medium format systems.

Digital Transitions PhotoPlus Expo Featured Speakers:

KEITH MAJOR – It’s Not About Me – October 24 2:00 PM

How I checked my ego in order to get the desired shots. I’ll tell the stories behind how personalities like Kevin Hart, David Koch, Iris Apfel, and Frank Lucas (Frank is the subject of the movie American Gangster played by Denzel Washington) can affect the mood of a shoot. I discuss how things went, how I handled situations. I discuss how crazy it can get sometimes and what I believe one can do to keep things even or what to do when caught in the eye of the storm. I believe a selfless approach to be a valuable asset in getting to the next level.

Keith Major is regarded as one of New York’s premier commercial photographers. He has shot for several a-list clients including Sony Music, Colgate-Palmolive, Essence and Cosmopolitan. Click here to learn more about Keith and see his work.

ADAM ELSTEIN – Technical Camera Craft 101 – October 25 10:00 AM

Technical Cameras are surrounded with a kind of mystique that can scare off some photographers. In fact,  they are extremely simple to use and offer unparalleled flexibility and image quality.

In this talk, architectural photographer and Pratt professor Adam Elstein will demystify the craft of shooting with technical cameras.  He will discuss all aspects of technical camera workflow, including lens choice, composition, perspective control, focusing, capture techniques, and post-processing. Shooting on a technical camera both requires and rewards deliberate craft.  The results are well worth it. Come and discover how these elegant devices can transform your photography.

Adam Elstein is an architectural photographer and educator.  He has been a professor at Pratt Institute since 2007, and leads workshops through the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and other institutions. His work, which has won numerous awards and has been exhibited internationally, can be seen here.

MARTIN AXON – Historical Applications for Digital Photography – October 25 2:00 PM

Martin Axon is a photographer and master analog printmaker with over 50 years of experience printing black & white and color photographs for photographers such as Horst P. Horst, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bert Stern, Annie Leibovitz, Richard Avedon, Patrick Demarchelier, and Roman Vishniac.

He is perhaps best known for his over 30 years of printing using the Platinum-Palladium process, even collaborating with the Arches paper Mill in 1982 to create the now-famous paper sheet Arches Platine.

Over the last year he has consulted with Digital Transitions to examine the potential of using their Cultural Heritage Instant Capture Film Digitization systems for creating files for printing in historical archival alternative processes. It has quickly become his preferred method of film digitization due to its superior clarity, dynamic range, and a rapid capture times over any previous scanning system, making it a perfect match for digitizing large film archives in high definition and providing robust files for his complex Platinum-Palladium printmaking processes.

His photographs have been exhibited at The Guild Hall Museum, The Photographers Gallery in London, The New Jersey State Museum, and the British Arts Council’s traveling exhibition, and a current exhibition at The Guggenheim Museum displays his platinum works of Robert Mapplethorpe.

For more information on Martin Axon and his work visit his website.

ARNAB CHATTERJEE – Modern Film Scanning – October 25 4:00 PM

Do you ever wish you could turn your slides and negatives into real raw files, rather than flat, over-sharpened TIFFs? We have the solution you’ve been waiting for – and you don’t want to miss this! We’ll give you an inside look at how the huge film collections at Disney, The Getty Museum, and the Library of Congress use DT instant capture systems to digitize their multi-million frame archives in record time – with superior quality to drum and virtual-drum scanners. And the best part? We’ll have demo stations up and running, so you can give your own frames the “cultural heritage” treatment! Bring one of your own standard 35mm, 645, or 6×6 film frames with you to have digitized in seconds!* We’ll provide you with your very own personal raw files in addition to sample files that will be available to all attendees. For first-time users, we recommend bringing either black and white negatives or color slides, as we will not be covering raw workflows for color negative conversion. Files will be made available via file-sharing links shortly after the event. Your registration confirms your attendance to the event on October 25 and holds your reservation.

*Disclaimer: Digital Transitions reserves the right to close the event or refuse additional scans if the venue is at capacity or there is not proper time to complete all scans.
